Kadavu (pronounced Kahn-da-voo), has a population of approximately 8700 and lies only 88 kilometers south of Suva. Due to its remoteness, Kadavu has escaped the onslaught of the 20th century. Most areas are accessible only by boat; no traffic means no hectic rush. The absence of mass tourism means the islanders are truly enthused and grateful for the few visitors they get. Here on Kadavu, village life has remained far more intact than on some of the larger Fijian islands. Due to its isolation, the ancient chain of respect for their chief and tribal traditions has remained unbroken. |
